"Law is not enough for freedom, changes in ideas are also must"
IHOP Steering Committee members visited the president of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Mr. Bulent Arınç in his office to inform him about the ongoing "Freedom of Expression Campaign" on 13 October 2006. The members of the IHOP Steering Commitee participated the meeting were Yusuf Alataş (President of Human Rights Association), Levent Korkut (President of Amnesty International Turkey), Umit Fırat (Board member of Helsinki Citizens' Assembly), Ayhan Bilgen (President of MAZLUMDER), and Zeynep Kıvılcım Forsman (Istanbul Group Coordinator of Amnesty International Turkey).

Although important developments have been realized on the path of building mechanisms to prevent human rights violations through the last century, especially preventive mechanisms to eliminate collective violations committed under control of the legal or de facto holders of power, who are also state or non state actors, were underestimated; and non governmental organizations working in this field did not be able to eliminate these kinds of violations. |

The fundamental issue is that the problems should be resolved using democratic and peaceful methods in a democratic country that has accepted rule of law. In the case that the use of armed forces will be unavoidable, the actions should be within the framework of law and the applications should be transparent in such way that the supervision of the actions by the press and non-governmental organizations but particularly by the judicial organs will not be prevented. |
